-Posters
The purpose of advertising this film was to make it appear as if the Blair Witch project was a student film that recorded real events. Posters were marketed as missing persons leaflets and photos from fake police reports. The advertising team even went as far as creating fake articles and putting them in small newspapers to convince people that the film was real.
-Social Media/Online
The Blair Witch project was released in 1999 where the only forms of social media were chat rooms and message boards. Chat rooms were used to spread rumors about the actors being "missing persons" and whether or not the movie was actually real. Additionally the IMdB page lists the actors presumed dead or missing. This stirred up interest in users and inspired the topic of The Blair Witch project to be spread across multiple forums. Additionally, the website for the Blair Witch Project was cheap and simple. It appeared as if it was made by the student film makers and included background information about the Blair Witch.
-Trailers
Trailers for the Blair Witch Project were purposely low-quality and simple to emphasize the idea that the movie was made by students. They were not shown in mainstream media or regular television channels to perpetuate this idea. Additionally, a mini documentary was made and shown on the Sci-Fi channel about the Blair Witch.
