During the filming process my partner and I used a few traditional conventions. We used continuity editing to help the viewer understand our story line while using mostly mid-shots so the audience could see what was happening at all times. We also used traditional conventions when choosing a title for our film. "The Boss" is a very traditional and transparent title. It leaves little to the imagination and informs the viewer the main focus of the film.
Although we used many traditional conventions we challenged them as well. One way we challenged them was by never showing the Boss' face. It is not typical for the main character of film to be obscured through out the entire film. We also challenged conventions by killing off our main character within the first two minutes of our film. This is highly unusual as a main character is often responsible for carrying the plot of a film.
Our film represented the social group of teenagers. All of our actors are teenagers which was a deliberate casting choice. The pressure the teenagers in the film feel to cater to the boss is a metaphor for the pressures teenagers face from adults in life. One character in the film runs away because the pressure becomes so great to please the boss. This is reflected of the pressures of school and how it forces teenagers to quit. Women in power are also represented in the film. The Boss is a female in a high position of power which is not often seen in block buster movies.
Our film also represented those that are involved in the black market. This social group is not often represented and I feel as though this challenged the conventions of what groups are typically represented.
